WANTAGH, NY — Two Wantagh seniors have won a combined $3,000 in scholarship money after taking first and second place in a pedestrian safety competition, according to a report.

Olivia Vinson, a senior at Wantagh High School, took the top spot last month in the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety’s Pedestrian Video Scholarship Competition, the organization announced in a Facebook post.

In the winning video, Vinson and two other girls demonstrate to the audience when it’s safe — and not — to cross the street. The girls explain how to interpret the pedestrian walk sign and recommend looking both ways before crossing a street. They also talk about who has the right of way when a pedestrian is walking on a sidewalk in front of a car trying to leave a parking lot.

Vinson used iMovie software to make the video, Newsday reported.

“Pedestrian safety is something a lot of people take for granted,” she said.

Fellow Wantagh High School Morgan Flaherty placed second in the competition. You can watch her video below.

Vinson and Flaherty were recognized at an event at St. Joseph Hospital.

Walk Safe Long Island aims to raise awareness, teach and empower residents to increase health and safety while walking.
