SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Kids Free October promotions features museums, parks, and more all over San Diego County. Kids 11 years of age and younger will be offered free admission at both the Zoo and Safari Park from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, 2018, with special activities scheduled every weekend.

Wednesday, KUSI’s Allie Wagner spent the morning at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park getting all the details on what you can expect when you take your child for a fun, free experience. As part of Kids Free presented by Mission Fed, Zoo and Safari Park guests will get the chance to observe amazing creatures, experience a fun day with family and learn how everyone can help animals through conservation.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only at the Zoo, HalGLOWeen entertainment starts October 11, and include a bubble dance party with the energetic Funky Monkeys, cupcake walks, Boolahoops fun, the musical stylings of Dusty Keys, and a Spooky Revue. There will also be special animal experiences, and opportunities so meet our very own Boo Crew.

Weekends only at the Park, families can enjoy amazing entertainment—including Mariachi dancers, stilt walkers, and an interactive puppet theatre. Kids will also get the chance to come face to face with some fascinating animal ambassadors and a variety of keeper talks that will give everyone a new way of looking at wildlife. This year, the Safari Park will extend free admission for kids through the first three days in November, to celebrate Día de los Muertos—a multi-day event, honoring Mexico’s traditional Day of the Dead.

Allie’s first stop was at the Red River Hog (Bush Pig) exhibit. Red River Hogs get their name because of their reddish brown fur and the fact that they often wade through the water. They are omnivorous, eating mainly roots and tubers, but are known to eat almost anything, including insects, dead animals, and plant remains.

Allie then ventured over to the Giraffe exhibit where she got to feed them live on camera!

Giraffe’s are the world’s tallest animals, standing up to 17-feet tall. A giraffe’s 6-foot neck weighs about 600 pounds, and their legs are 6-feet long! A giraffe’s hear is 2-feet long and weighs about 25 pounds.

And last but not least, Allie got to visit the baby rhino!

During October, Zoo closes at 6 p.m. except weekends when it closes at 9 p.m., and the Safari Park closes at 5 p.m. during the week and 6 p.m. on the weekends. All children younger than 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult during their visits to the Zoo and the Safari Park.
